Dance has a power, like other art forms, to move us to emotion. These emotions provide powerful memories. The movement becomes a symbol that provides deep meaning and purpose to our history, and evolution. It frames the concept of how we define dance, how we understand dance, and how we give purpose to the creative, meaningful qualities of dance. Over the centuries of time, villages, tribes, communities, cultural groups, and friends have all experienced lasting bonds as well as finding the healing qualities through movement itself – the therapeutic aspect of the body in motion.
Martha Graham advises us with these beautiful words of wisdom:
There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening, that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique.
Dance has a power to “choreograph” the human experience by connecting and bonding through the art of visually replicating the stories that preserves tradition and community. The resulting bond that ties together humanity is enhanced and deepened through the dance experience.
Finding Joy and Healing
In this podcast we explore the joy of dancing and its healing qualities. Dr. Wendy talks about a time in her life when the salsa dance helped her to heal physically. In her journey she learned that this latin dance has roots stemming from African and European cultures. The percussion of the music mimics the heartbeat and thus leads the body into a natural rhythm of healing. And we could talk for hours about the joy of dancing. The spontaneous, expressive movement of dance that happens at clubs, events and our favorite, weddings, is so much fun! The coming together of two families, two lives and possibly two cultures can be the ultimate expression of joy.
If you think you can’t dance and that you have two left feet, Dr. Wendy begs differ and has heard all of the excuses. So, remember the quote from Martha Graham…… there is only one you in all of time. Get out on the dance floor of life and know that your movement and your joy is a unique expression of you!
